Jim had a 10:00 am appt to get a COVID vaccine at Safeway (Drake & Taft, 4.7 miles from our house) this morning. He left the house at 9:00 am and got stuck in the street at 9:02 am. At 12:18 pm, he left on (really old) cross country skis. They told him they'd hold the vaccine for him until 4:00 pm. Today is his 60th birthday, and it appears that it's going to be a memorable one after all :D

Update: 12:40 pm

He made it .6 miles in 15 minutes. He says it's slow going, but he's pretty sure he can make it by 4:00 pm.

Update: 1:15 pm

He's made it to Harmony & Shields (~1.7 miles), but says it's too hard to continue on skis. He's going to see if walking is possible.

Update: 1:30 pm

He says it's too tiring and he's heading home.

Update: 1:45 pm

Thanks to some Facebook "networking", Mr. P. (our former daycare provider's husband) is going to pick Jim up ... hopefully. And take him to the appt.

Update: 2:10 pm

Jim is at Safeway! They're going to give him a Pfizer vaccine (even though he thinks they told him to expect Moderna).

Update: 2:30 pm

Jim got the shot! He'll be heading home soon thanks to his chauffeur, Mr. P.

Update: 3:09 pm

He's at Shields and Clarendon Hills Drive and planning to walk home through that neighborhood which is plowed. I have no idea if he's lugging his skis or has abandoned them :)

3:50 pm: I can hear him talking with a neighbor (he must be standing behind the big pine tree)

3:53 pm: He's home ... and vaccinated!

Update: 4:05 pm

Here come the stories. Jim says that things are moving in the rest of the city. Apparently once you get to the end of our street it's like a whole 'nuther world.

Update: 4:30 pm

Jim says the photo makes him look way more energetic than he feels, and ...

We're not sure how he's going to know the difference between a vaccine side effect and normal aches and pains from a lot of physical exertion at age 60.

Update: 4:35 pm

Apparently there is a big difference between cross country skiing on a  groomed trail and through a city with plowed streets, snow banks, buried sidewalks, and traffic lights :D

Update: 9:45 pm

Jim says, "Wow that [gas] fireplace sure is kicking out a lot of heat. My face is so warm." (I suspect it's sunburn.) His arm is "a little sore". And he's yawning a lot :)
